Supported independent living is for people with higher support needs, who need some level of help at home all the time. Supported independent living is best suited to people with a disability who have higher support needs. This means you need a significant amount of help throughout the day, 7 days a week.

Supported Independent Living, or ‘SIL’, is what the NDIS calls the supports a person needs for their tasks around the home. It’s for the things we do every day, including: Personal care, like showering and dressing, cooking and eating.

The SIL Coordinator oversees the day to day operations of one or more group homes, ensuring the provision of high quality, person centred support and care to residents that optimises the quality of life of each person.

Seek out SIL providers who have experience supporting people with similar requirements to yours. For example, some SIL providers will cater for people who are living with psychosocial disability, while others will better support people who are living with physical disability.

SIL offers individualised support services tailored to the specific needs and preferences of each person. Support workers are trained to understand and address the unique requirements of individuals with disabilities, including physical, intellectual, sensory, or psychosocial disabilities.

Typically, an NDIS plan is broken down into 3 parts; About Me, My Goals and My Supports. As well as this, your plan will show: Your name. NDIS number.

There are three main types of NDIS plans for managing funding:

Self-Managed: You directly manage your NDIS funding, accessing supports that align with your goals.

Plan-Managed: The NDIA provides funding for a Plan Manager who pays your providers, tracks funds, and handles financial reporting on your behalf.

NDIA-Managed: The NDIA pays your providers directly.

You can also choose a combination of these options, such as self-managing part of your plan while having the rest managed by the NDIA. Regardless of the management type, you retain choice and control over your services and budget.
